Meet Hunter, the Eastern Screetch Owl from the Fall Owl Fest ~

In June of 2002, this young owlet fell from his nest cavity. Although he didn’t sustain any injuries from the fall, Hunter was attacked by Blue Jays while on the ground. Even though he was far too young to pose any real threat, Blue Jays will commonly attack any predatory bird in the area.
His left eye was seriously injured in the attack and could not be saved. Since Hunter was still a downy owlet at the time of the attack, it was unsure if there would be permanent damage to the feathers.

Hunter was transferred to The Avian Reconditioning Center to recuperate following surgery and became a permanent resident shortly thereafter. Although it seemed to take a long while, new feathers slowly began to emerge!

Typical of this nocturnal species, Hunter is content to perch quietly during the day, sometimes venturing onto the top of his "nestbox." Before settling down for the day, Hunter greets the sunrise with much twittering, trilling and the quavering whistled call common to the Screech-owl.

At night he usually chooses to sit on a high branch in his mew and will often splash about in his bath bowl before eating his dinner. When meeting strangers, he often cocks his head to the right as if to ask "Who are you?"

Eastern Screetch Owl is a small owl.

Adults range from 16 to 25 cm (6.3-9.8 in) in length. They have either rusty or dark gray intricately patterned plumage with streaking on the underparts. Small and stocky, short-tailed and broad-winged, they have a large round head with ear tufts, yellow eyes and a yellowish bill. Rusty birds are more common in the southern parts of the range; pairings of the two color variants do occur. A pale gray variation also exists in western Canada and the north-central United States. The color variations are referred to as "red-phase" and "gray-phase" by bird watchers and ornithologists.

Their breeding habitat is deciduous or mixed woods in eastern North America. Usually solitary, they nest in a tree cavity, either natural or excavated by a woodpecker; they will also use nesting boxes. They are strictly nocturnal, roosting during the day in cavities or next to tree trunks. They are quite common, though generally go unnoticed, and can often be found in residential areas.
